Michael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children in a working-class family. From the age of five he was performing professionally with his brothers as part of The Jackson 5, but even in those early years it was clear that Michael possessed something extraordinary — a musical instinct, a physical grace, and a hunger for perfection that set him apart from everyone around him.
